January Update

Hi Legacy Students, Parents and Leaders...It's 2011.... did I just get used to writing 2010 on all of my papers? I love heading into a new year because it always gives me reason to reflect on where I am in life and where I want to be. I have decided to really focus on growth for this upcoming year- growth for myself, growth for my family and growth for all the students in LEGACY. What does God want you to focus on for this next year? What are you willing to sacrifice to fulfill His will in your life for 2011? Every year I ask myself a series of questions to evaluate where I am at, how I have changed and where I need to be. Here are some questions to ask yourself as we head into this incredible new year:

  • What important changes did you make in 2010 that brought you closer to God?
  • In what areas did you feel you ignored, disobeyed or forgot God?
  • What new things did you learn about God?
  • What ONE word would God use to describe your life this past year?
  • What areas does God want you to STEP UP in for 2011?
  • How can you make God known in this next year in your life? in others lives?
  • What ways can you spend more time with God in 2011?
There are plenty more questions you can ask to rethink this past year and really set yourself up for success for the next one, but these will at least get you started. God has so much He wants to do in this next year, and I want to make sure that the students in LEGACY are right in the middle of His will. If God speaks to you during the January fast, or anytime for that matter, please make sure to share that with myself or one of the youth leaders. We want to know what God has shown you!
Happy New Year Everyone!!!

Book: "God's Chosen Fast" by Authur Wallis
This is the book we've had in our bookstore/cafe for years when it comes time for our January fast. Wallis' aim is to furnish a handbook which deals not only with all the main passages in Scripture that touch on the matter, but also with the practical issues involved. It's worth the investment to have it on your bookshelf.

Music and DVDs: "Hold On" Music inspired by Nefarious, the Documentary
Excerpt from their site: Music is one of the tools God will use to connect our hearts to the justice movement. That’s why we’re releasing our own version of “fight songs” in the new CD Hold On: Songs from the Nefarious Documentary. The anthems on this CD do more than raise awareness of the issue; they point our hearts to the solution, Christ Jesus. As we exalt Jesus, the Judge of the earth, through singing, our hearts will be knit to His purposes. We will be quickened to righteousness and impassioned for the desires of Jesus.

December Update

Hi Legacy Students, Parents and Leaders...It's December and I am jumping out of my skin. All I can think about is Christmas.... hot cocoa, cinnamon candles, advent calendars, Christmas lights and, dare we say it, possibly even SNOW! I even bought all of my kids matching footed PJs to wear Christmas Eve night! (I have a feeling they will dread this holiday tradition when they get older, but if Cora can wear them to a lock-in, then maybe there is still hope!) Although we try our hardest, it is hard to keep our head on straight when it comes to the holidays. I mean, we know that God should be the center, but a lot of times He is the One that gets left out in the cold as we decorate our house for family. We don't mean to do it, it's just that the holidays come so quickly and it's tempting to lose track of the real reason for Christmas.

What can you do different this year to make sure that God is your focus? What about taking some extra time to spend with Him in the morning? Could you share with your dad or mom the things that God has been showing you lately in His Word? How about sharing a testimony with a loved one at your Christmas dinner? There are so many ways we can continue to give God glory during the season we celebrate His birth, so take the opportunity to make Him #1!

Check out this video called Advent Conspiracy to be inspired to do something different this Christmas season.

12 Words of Christmas
December 8th
DVD Series by Louie Giglio
It's the greatest story ever told. Completely unforeseen, yet long awaited was the voice of God breaking through the darkness and four hundred years of silence with the cry of a baby. And not just any baby, the gift of God. God's people, having waited generations for their Creator to reveal Himself, never would have imagined that rescue and redemption would come in the simple, vulnerable form of a child, a baby born under the radar and into the chaos-- announced by twelve words that changed history and brought hope to humanity. That's the message of Christmas, God with us, full of grace and truth. And no one on earth is too far from His love. No one beyond His reach. He's at work in your life, even in the midst of the chaos, and promises to bring you through. Merry Christmas. The Savior is here.

Re-Cap of November:

Black Friday Outreach
Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 25th from 9pm-1am
We had a wonderful turnout for our 2nd annual Black Friday Outreach (about 22 people, with about 75% of them being youth).
Here are a couple of pictures from my blog and an excerpt from my sister Keri's blog:
"Black Friday Outreach was created to meet the needs of the community. The needs of our community on Black Friday is warmth as they stand outside and battle freezing cold rain waiting in line for an amazing deal they can only hope to obtain. Around 9-10 pm, a group of us arrived at Toys R Us and Best Buy. The lines were around the building and the response was amazing. We passed out free hot chocolate, hot coffee, water, soda, cookies and snacks. These people were truly grateful and received God's love. God stopped the rain again during this outreach....He is good! What an amazing opportunity to participate in a selfless outreach to honor God and reflect his goodness."

FEAR Series
Wednesdays, November 10, 17, 24, December 1
Taught by Mr. Brian and Miss Jill
Series for both Junior High and High School Ministries

So many people live their lives paralyzed by fear. Four most common fears people suffer from are fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of intimacy, and fear of losing control. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power. On the final night of this series, God used Mercedes to share a very personal story of fear, which in turn opened the door for a lot of students to be vulnerable about their own fears. We were able to see God's divine hand touch these students and show them His unconditional love for them.
Some of the videos watched are available for download here.

Prayer Requests for December:
  1. For opportunities for all of us to share our faith with our loved ones during the holiday season
  2. That God would continue to be the center of our thoughts throughout Christmas and the New Year
  3. That those struggling with loneliness and insecurities would feel God's unconditional love

Book: "Jesus Among Other Gods (for youth)" by Ravi Zacharias
In this youth edition of Jesus Among Other Gods, Ravi Zacharias gives solid evidence as to why we should choose Jesus Christ as THE God among all other gods. Zacharias contrasts the truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, providing strong descriptions of each faith and solid defenses for the cause of Christ. In addition to the religion comparisons, the book answers questions such as: "What about all the hypocrites at church?" "How scientific is science?" "How can you best share what you believe?" and "Does the Bible teach reincarnation?" You can never be too young to learn how to defend your faith . . . and this book will tell you exactly how to do just that!

September Update

Hi Legacy Students, Parents and Leaders...I have been overwhelmed in prayer this month as I have been praying for our teenagers. Here are some scriptures that I have been speaking over the youth for this upcoming year. Will you join with me?
  • Psalm 145:4-7- One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
  • Habakkuk 3:2- O Lord I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy
  • Psalm 51:10-13- Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your Presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your generous spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.
  • Isaiah 44:3- For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

"Fear God" High School Talk
(A DVD by Francis Chan)
Wednesday, September 1st, 8th
Taught by Pastor Lori

Synopsis:
To understand the relationship between God and man, we turn to those who have directly interacted with Him in the Bible. In each case, they are met with fear... sheer speechlessness, humility, and complete surrender. Most people today have lost this fear. We must understand that a true fear of God leads to the keeping of His commandments, leads to life, and is the beginning of wisdom. Everyone who has come face-to-face with God falls over in fear. Do you think you’d do anything different?

Thank you for allowing God to use you in new ways and using your ministry experience to build faith in the foster children.

July Update

Hi Legacy Students, Parents and Leaders...I honestly cannot believe it is JULY! Where has the year gone? It seems like everyone is talking about taking a vacation before school starts again and I can't help but wish I had some time this summer to go camping (between camp and the pregnancy, I don't have much faith it's going to happen this summer). Although the worst part of camping is putting everything away once you get home, one of my favorite parts of camping is getting all the gear together beforehand: marshmallows, camping chairs, lanterns, coffee thermos, flashlights/glow sticks, citronella candles, etc. There are so many things you need while camping to make your trip successful, especially the more people you bring, and everything serves a purpose.

What are the things you need to make your endeavor with the Lord successful? Knowledge of the Word of God? Good Christian friends? Spiritual mentors to keep you accountable? Think through your relationship with the Lord: what could you add to draw you closer to Him? It might not be something you need to add, it could quite possibly be something you need to remove. We should constantly be evaluating our pursuit of Jesus, making sure we are doing everything we can to draw near to Him.
Ephesians 1:17-18, James 4:8, Philippians 3:7-14

  • Student may want to have another outfit available to change into after service (they will be wearing their polo the following day and might want to keep it clean).
  • Each student must have EVERYTHING packed and labeled ("The Crew Girls/Guys") and brought to the church at this time. Your best bet is to put it in a garbage bag, labeled with duct tape. Re-Cap of June:
Summer RAGE- TIME WARP

Every generation of teenagers hears phrases like "This is the hardest time to be a teenager", "I wouldn't want to be a teenager now-a-days" or "You couldn't pay me enough to become a teenager again!" What causes people to say that? More importantly, what was it like to be a teenager in the 1950's? The 1970's? The 1990's? This year for Summer RAGE we warped back in time to hear from previous generations on what it was like to be a teenager back when they were growing up.

Wednesday, June 2nd- 1950's

Speaker: Grandma Pat Girgenti
We learned quite a few things about Grandma Pat: she is an amazing singer, she wasn't allowed to chew gum at school and God has brought her through some incredible hardships to testify of His faithfulness.
Provoking thought of the night:
God has a plan, but the devil has a plot.

Wednesday, June 9th- 1960's

Speaker: Pastor Terry Carlson

Did you know that Pastor Terry used to make his girlfriend, who is now his wife, Pastor Pat, take off her shoes before entering his 1968 Z-28 Camaro so that the rugs wouldn't get dirty?
Provoking thought of the night: Although God has always been, he isn't "old." He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and knows exactly what to do in situations you find yourself in today!

Wednesday, June 16th- 1970's

Speaker: Mr. Mike Piccolo
Just imagine Mr. Piccolo dying his hair with Miss Clairol when he was a teenager.
Provoking thought of the night: It's important to be a good witness for Christ with your life, because you never know the impact you have on those around you.

Wednesday, June 23rd- 1980's

Speakers: Pastors Joel and Aimee Johnston

Who knew perms were popular for men and women?
Provoking thought of the night: Hebrews 12:1-3 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Wednesday, June 30th- 1990s

Speaker: Pastor Michael Molloy
MIME: The art of portraying characters and acting out situations or a narrative by gesturesand body movement without the use of words; pantomime.
Provoking thought of the night:
Take advantage of the spiritual leaders God has placed in your life. You can learn a lot by asking them to speak into your life.

*** DON'T FORGET THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE MAKING A TIME CAPSULE FOR OUR LAST NIGHT OF SUMMER RAGE, ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 7TH. Please bring something to place in the bin that would symbolize your decade and time as a teenager. We will also be opening up the Legacy Coffeebar and having some special treats. Don't miss it! ***

Parting Thoughts:
Here are some resources I would like to pass along for this month. Enjoy!

Video: Please check out the "Do It For The Story" Promotional Trailer. I am so proud of my super-talented friend, Joel Clark. We traveled together on a team to Uganda, Africa in high school and since then he has been traveling the globe, spreading the love of Jesus (and writing a book!)

Book:
When I was growing up, one of my favorite series to read was the MEN AND WOMEN OF FAITH series. They were all very easy reading and I read them over and over and it really built my faith and gave me a love for missions.
Here are some of my absolute favorites: Hudson Taylor, George Muller, Eric Liddell, Gladys Aylward, Amy Carmichael, Brother Andrew, Jonathan Edwards

Website: Kids In Mind

Ever wonder what is in a movie before you go and see it? This is a website I love to use to find out if a particular movie has content in it that I would rather not see. Check it out before you spend $9 on a movie you will find yourself walking out of. (GREAT site for parents!!)

Music:
Passion Awakening by Passion
Worship songs from Passion 2010 in Atlanta. Some of my favorites are "Healing is in Your Hands" by Christy Nockels and "Chosen Generation" by Chris Tomlin.

Downloads: Free Josh McDowell Book Downloads
Here is a great link for some of Josh McDowell's books that are now out of print and some of his debate transcriptions. Check out "Out of the Moral Maze" and "Truth Matters"
